2010 Elections Results

Alaska Conservation Voters give you a quick summary of the results of the 2010 general elections and a run down of how endorsed candidates did in their campaigns.

Well, at least no one can ever accuse Alaska politics of being boring!

Across Alaska, voters elected conservation candidates who supported conservation and economic values like clean energy, healthy salmon and public transportation.   All in all, 18 of ACV’s 24 endorsed candidates were elected and we’re proud and excited to have supported those leaders who value Alaska’s spectacular natural environment.  We’re disappointed about the six we missed, individuals who understand the balance between a healthy environment and a strong economy.  But, there’s too much work to be done and there are too many exciting opportunities coming up to look back for long.

Alaska Conservation Voters used a variety of strategic tactics to educate voters and help our candidates win.  Armed with a meager budget compared to some other independent groups, Conservation Voters strategically deployed its resources to maximize our impacts. Our canvassers communicated both face-to-face and over the phone with nearly 7,500 voters in multiple cities and towns about conservation issues and candidates.  Our 2010 Voter Guide was downloaded a record number of times and our sister organization, Alaska Conservation Alliance, did a great job educating voters over the radio waves about energy issues, as well as registering Alaskans to vote.

The results speak for themselves.  Alaska Conservation Voters endorsed candidates include Senators and Representatives, incumbents and newcomers, from both sides of the aisle. Conservation values are non-partisan and we’re proud to have supported (to name only a few!) candidates like

  • Senator Bill Wielechowski (D, Anchorage),
  • Senator Joe Thomas (D, Fairbanks),
  • Senator Lesil McGuire (R, Anchorage),
  • Rep. Bob Miller (D, Fairbanks),
  • Rep. Paul Seaton (R, Homer), and
  • Rep. Charisse Millett (R, Anchorage)

It’s a simple fact that in order to get good policy you have to elect strong leaders.

So as Alaska Conservation Voters moves from the hard work of electing pro-conservation candidates into the real work of creating and enacting pro-conservation legislation, we will continue to push and ensure that conservation priorities are Alaskan political priorities.
