ADN Editorial: Tap wind, cut taxes

The ADN agrees with Alaska Conservation Voters - Senator Lesil McGuire's bill, HB31 to cut taxes on alternative energy projects, is a good way to encourage Alaska energy producers to make more energy from renewable sources.

The 2.1 cents figure matches a federal program's tax break for wind, geothermal and biomass electricity production.

"The idea here is simple: Encourage Alaska energy producers to give us more power from alternative and renewable sources for the sake of energy efficiency, a cleaner environment and reduced costs."

The ADN also points out that SB31 encourages companies to take the risk by paying the upfront costs - only getting the tax credits after Alaskans are receiving the benefits of renewable energy flowing into their homes.
